There are all kinds of classroom management techniques that teachers can use, but one of my favorites is call and response. It is very simple but works great when students are working and you need to get their attention. The teacher says part of a phrase, and the students stop working and respond with the remainder of the phrase.
The phrases can be rhyming phrases, lyrics to a song, or just silly sayings. The call and response classroom management technique is easy to use and can be used with all grade levels. I have seen it used in kindergarten classrooms where the teacher picks one phrase to use the whole year. I have also seen it used in upper elementary and even into high school.
The call and response classroom management technique can be used when students are working on independent projects, in small groups, or in a large group. When the teacher needs the class’s attention, they say the first part of the saying. It is important that the students stop working and then respond with the second half of the saying. They need to stop working to hear the directions that are coming.
