Product Description

When your students read a piece of literature, they are bound to encounter unfamiliar words. Some students simply ignore the unknown words and continue reading, which isn’t a good strategy. We want students to use context clues, or hints from the text, to determine the meaning of these words so that they can increase their vocabulary and better understand what they are reading.

This resource is designed to help your students develop strategies to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words while they are reading. I chose vocabulary words that will be unfamiliar or vaguely familiar to your students and provided various levels of context to assist them in determining the word’s meaning. In this resource, students will use restatements, synonyms, antonyms, inferences, examples, definitions, and the word’s part of speech to determine its meaning.

I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EACH PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom!

Included in this resource:
Leveled Passages
This resource contains ten differentiated fiction passages. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

Short-Answer and Multiple-Choice Questions
The passages include various types of matching, multiple-choice, and short-answer questions. The questions become increasingly complex as you progress through the resource. Initially, the questions require students to match words to their meaning using restatements, examples, antonyms, and synonyms for context. As students progress through the resource, they will also be required to use inferences and a word’s part of speech for context. Additionally, students will have to go beyond identification and also explain which words or phrases (context) helped them understand the meaning. Finally, students will have to determine the meaning of a word and synthesize by demonstrating how the word could be used in another sentence.
