The purpose of reading paired literature passages is to provide students with an opportunity to compare and contrast different literary elements. With a set of paired literature passages, students can be prompted to find connections and differences in story/plot elements, topics, genres, themes, details, etc.

The goal of this resource is to help your students practice and master comparing and contrasting different literary elements. This resource will help you efficiently target this skill. The passages are an appropriate length and have clear connections and differences for your students to analyze. In this resource, I provide a variety of different genres including Greek mythology, Native American folktales, mysteries, science-fiction stories, fantasy, realistic fiction, etc. Additionally, the questions are designed to guide students to think about a variety of different ways they can compare and contrast two pieces of literature and analyze them to make connections.

I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EACH PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom!

This resource addresses the following skills:
1.) Comparing and contrasting characters, settings, plots, and themes of stories that involve the same character
2.) Comparing and contrasting themes and patterns of events in myths or literature from different cultures (fables, folktales, etc.)
3.) Comparing and contrasting themes and topics of stories from the same genre
4.) Comparing and contrasting themes and topics from stories with different genres

Included in this resource:
Leveled Passages
This resource contains ten differentiated fiction passages. The passages span a variety of genres including Greek mythology, Native American folktales, mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, etc. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

Six Short-Answer and/or Multiple Choice Questions Per Passage
Each passage includes six questions, which include a variety of multiple choice, written response, and a Thinking Map (the Thinking Map is a Double Bubble Thinking Map, which you can read more about on my blog.
