Analyzing a story’s point of view is an important skill to help students with their reading and writing. When students read a piece of literature, I want them to think critically about it. I want them to consider who they are listening to, whose head they are in, and whose eyes they are watching the story through. Asking and answering these questions will help them engage in a deeper analysis of the text. They will have to analyze how the perspective of the narrator shapes the story and affects the way the events are portrayed.

The goal of this resource is to help you practice point of view with your students. This resource targets this skill by providing various stories in which the point of view and narrator’s perspective has a dramatic impact on the story. Stories with this emphasis provide your students with an opportunity to practice this skill and become more thoughtful readers and writers.

Leveled Passages
This resource contains ten differentiated fiction passages. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

Combination of Short-Answer and Multiple-Choice Questions
Each passage contains a set of questions that include a combination short-answer and multiple-choice questions, as well as tables and a graphic organizer for students to complete. The questions become increasingly complex as students progress through the resource.

This resource addresses the following skills:
-Identifying narrator’s point of view (first-person and third-person);
-Analyzing different speakers’ accounts of the same event;
-Analyzing how a narrator or speaker’s perspective shapes the way events are described;
-Explaining how they (students) would present the events differently to make readers feel a certain way about a character or characters;
-Explaining how the author develops the perspective/point of view of a speaker with thoughts, actions, and feelings of the speaker and other characters.
-Completing a graphic organizer to identify the different methods an author uses to develop the perspective/point of view of a speaker.
